How to use this course:

Course structure
This course is separated into 10 explorations. Each exploration consists of Grammar and Assignments. Within each assignment there are several activities. A new grammar lesson is introduced at the beginning of the exploration. This grammar will be used throughout the assignments. The activities could contain audio, video, reading or a combination of all three, along with questions or interaction to test your knowledge. Play the example below to get a better understanding of the course structure.

Grammar
There are two ways to get to the grammar. The most obvious is the Grammar highlight iconGrammar Highlight Icon on the top of each exploration page. The other way is by clicking the Grammar icon Grammar icon in the "Tools" section of the top navigation. By clicking on this icon you will be be taken to the Grammar Master List. The Master List is a list of explorations that link to the grammar for each exploration. A Grammar Highlight is a short version of the full grammar for the selected exploration. Think of it as the first few pages of the full Grammar. The Grammar is a more detailed and consists of more examples, grammar rules and tips that help you better understand the Somali language. The diagram below shows the structure of the grammar. Notice that there is a Grammar highlight and Grammar for each exploration.

Tools
You can locate the tools on the top navigation. These tools are a group of useful links. You can find reference material and links to helpful material here. The tools panel screen shot is pictured below, along with a detailed list of each icon.

From top left to right..
  • Key Words - A list of words that will be used in the particular assignment. The keywords also have English translations and audio samples
  • Maps - A variety of maps that can be used as a reference.
  • Somali Dictionary - A dictionary of Somali words. You can use this dictionary to look up many words you see in the course.
  • Grammar - A master list of grammar for each Exploration.
  • Reference Material - A group of activities used to reference some of the fundamental topics of the language.
